Is Microblading for you?

Gone are the days when the beauty supply store pencil was the only alternative for filling in over- tweezed or ruined eyebrows. The results were never consistent and if you sweated profusely, you might just rub one off without even noticing. Times have changed for the better and thankfully there are a number of ways that “on fleek” brows can be achieved without running the risk of embarrassment. Some prefer the day-to-day maintenance of a brow pencil, gel or pomade. But for those who want a longer lasting solution, microblading may be right up your alley. This technique is all the rave and has beauty artists and influencers alike raving. We talked to PhiBrow certified cosmetic tattoo artist, Rochelle Magno who gave us the rundown on microblading. Rochelle is certified in both NYC and NJ and offers microblading at The Lash Gallery.

Microblading is a form of cosmetic tattooing that is done using the manual method. Fine hair-like strokes are implanted in the brow area to fill in and create fullness in sparse areas. When done by a trained professional, the results are natural looking and resemble real brow hairs.

For men or women who have sparse brows, over-tweezed brows or even undergone any health complications like alopecia or cancer that caused brows not to grow back, microblading is a great alternative to achieve the brow they desire.

Unlike traditional tattooed makeup, microblading is semi-permanent. “Because the implantation of the pigment is not as deep as the traditional tattoo, this method fades in time usually lasting between 12 to 18 months before a color refresh/ touchup is required; as opposed to permanent makeup which can last for years”. For clients who like to switch it up from time to time, microblading allows you to change your brow style once the pigment fades.

Once the microblading has been done, aftercare is essential to make sure that it heals properly. During the healing process, “avoid going tanning, swimming, or wearing makeup on the affected area. It’ll take your skin 4 weeks to heal properly and then a touch-up can be done to see if any corrections or color refresh is needed”. Exfoliants, chemical peels, tanning etc., on your brow areas will fade the pigment sooner; so avoid those after receiving the semi-permanent tattoo.

If microblading sounds like something you might want to consider, be sure to book a professional who has been trained in this particular cosmetic tattoo. Ask for pictures and make sure that the facility uses sanitized tools and properly disposes of soiled instruments. Typically, the cost of microblading can be anywhere from $800-$1100; so beware of artists with too-good-to-be-true prices. Though the tattoo is semi-permanent, taking the cheaper route and booking an inexperienced artist runs the risk of having brows you’re unhappy with on your face for about a year. Choose wisely.
